Welf I (or Hwelf; c. 776 – c. 825) is the first documented ancestor of the Elder House of Welf. He is mentioned as a count (comes) in the Frankish lands of Altdorf in Alamannia. He is the son of Rothard of the Argengau and grandson of Hardrad.

Hedwig also Heilwig, (c. 778 – c. 835) was a Saxon noblewoman, abbess of Chelles, the wife of Count Welf, and mother-in-law of Emperor Louis the Pious through his marriage to Judith, her daughter.
